After the Hubble Space Telescope arrived in space, it was discovered that its primary mirror had been ground incorrectly. Before sending up a replacement, the agency wanted to ensure it was accurate, so NASA held a "sense-off," in which several companies were invited to detect and correct slight defects in hidden mirrors. Only one company was accurate down to three thousandths of a wavelength of light.

The robots look different, depending on what they need to do, and they need special software to power the robot’s “brain.” Some of that software aims to give the robot specific instructions for any kind of situation it might find itself in (like how to move to avoid tripping over a rock) but newer artificial intelligence software aims to give the robot some parameters and the ability to determine how to respond to new situations itself.

Aerogel's low density, light weight, and unmatched thermal insulation performance piqued NASA's interest. Temperature management is important to an agency that manages the extreme temperatures in space and relies on cryogenic fuels. But the substance was extremely fragile, so in 1992, the senior investigator at a NASA cryogenics lab decided to pursue a sturdier form. With NASA funding, a research and development firm created the first aerogel blankets the following year.
