Following a tragic airplane crash that killed two members of Congress in 1972, the U.S. government directed NASA to develop a space-based distress alert system with the aim of providing near-global coverage. NASA has spearheaded this international effort and has, over several decades, continued to make significant improvements to it — helping to save tens of thousands of lives in the process.

NASA-funded experiments using algae as a recycling agent for long-duration space travel resulted in a method for using algae to produce omega-3 fatty acids found naturally in the body. Nearly all U.S. infant formulas are now enriched with these additives, which are believed to help with mental and visual development, as are a wide variety of foods for children, adults, pets, and livestock.

NASA Description

A company worked with NASA to study the possible use of single-celled algae for food supply, oxygen generation, and waste disposal in the agency’s Closed Environment Life Support System, a self-sustaining domicile intended to support crews in space for extended periods of time. The company hit on a species of algae that produces high levels of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA and, later, a fungus that produces the similar ARA.

The technology behind cordless hand-held vacuums and some power tools was derived from portable, battery-operated drills used to extract samples on the moon's surface. The private-industry innovations used today in the technology stemmed from NASA’s request for lightweight, energy-efficient, self-powering equipment to provide greater mobility and speed for astronauts performing time-critical operations in space.

NASA Description

Among the most important tasks performed by Apollo astronauts on the moon was collection of lunar rock and soil for later analysis on Earth. For a comprehensive look at the moon's crust, scientists wanted subsurface samples. This necessitated development of a special lunar drill capable of extracting core samples from as much as 10 feet below the surface. The job of developing the drill was entrusted to The Black & Decker Manufacturing Company, which used the technology it developed in the design of later consumer products.
