Video surveillance systems are useful to law enforcement investigations. But it is the quality and clarity of captured imagery that determines its usefulness. One company adapted NASA technology to produce enhanced video imaging. The system uses broadcast-quality video and a user-friendly interface to more effectively reveal recorded details and visibility of subjects, provide frame-by-frame analysis, and allow analog-to-digital video formatting.
NASA’s video image stabilization software can be traced back to technology originally developed to enhance images of the sun. Following the deadly 1996 Olympic Summer Games bombing in Atlanta, NASA further developed the software to help FBI agents analyze video footage of the crime. The technology enhanced nighttime videotapes made with hand-held camcorders and revealed important details about the explosion.
