A long relationship with NASA has improved one company's approach to developing controlled-release fertilizer and led to new formulations for specific types of plants. The controlled-release technology, improved with NASA's help, allows for the use of far less fertilizer far less often, reducing cost, labor, and environmentally harmful runoff.
A company's controlled-release fertilizer won state and federal recognition, including 40 hours of free consulting with NASA through the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program. The partnership led to a new, more effective approach to using polymer coatings to control the release of nutrients. NASA later called on the company to help grow flowering plants, such as tomatoes, on the space station. The resulting formula is improving yields for hydroponic growers and others.
