NASA’s light-filtering dyes heighten one's sharpness of vision by blocking out glint and glare. The same NASA safety technology that was first used to protect welders' eyes from the blue and ultraviolet rays of welding torches is now reflected in the trends of consumer sunglasses.
In the 1980s, NASA scientists were studying the harmful properties of light in space, as well as that of artificial radiation produced during laser and welding work. They found that birds of prey, which have the sharpest vision among animals, produce tiny droplets of oil in their eyes that filter out harmful radiation, protecting the eye while enhancing eyesight. The researchers replicated this oil droplet process, creating a protective welding curtain capable of absorbing, filtering, and scattering dangerous light.
