Do you store and access data over the Internet? You probably have NASA to thank: an early and important breakthrough in cloud-based computing, known as Open Stack, originated at NASA. Software developers partnered with industry to portion out storage and computing power on an as-needed basis. Now it is the most used open source cloud computing platform, used to manage data at many of the world’s most recognizable commercial brands and research organizations.
There are thousands of NASA web pages, devoted to the Agency's many missions and divisions. In 2008, a project was launched to provide web developers with a standard set of tools and methods, aiming for a more cohesive look. To make it work, the team realized they needed to build what they called an "infrastrusture layer" that would provide the computing power to run the NASA service. That turned out to be the basis for much of what we call "the Cloud" today.
