Rechargeable silver-zinc batteries are among the most powerful available, but challenges inherent in the technology made their adoption difficult. A company utilized decades of NASA research into silver-zinc batteries as the starting point for its own research and development. It now sells the first rechargeable hearing aid batteries that can last all day on a single charge.
In its early days, NASA spent much effort developing rechargeable silver-zinc batteries. Though more expensive than other metal pairs, a silver-zinc pairing offers a higher power-to-weight ratio than any other battery couple. At the same time, it proved to be one of the most difficult metal pairs to work with, as the electrodes in such batteries deteriorated quickly, causing them to fail. NASA research to solve this problem paved the way for later commercial use of the technology.
